As a sub-prefecture of Ain department, Gex is the Administrative capital of the Pays de Gex. The town is located at the foot of the Col de la Faucille, the natural border with the Jura, and very close to Switzerland. It is also one of the four towns entering in the Natural Park of Haut Jura. While wandering in the city, you will see the townhall, the church, Perdtemps school and square, beautiful houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, attesting of the historical wealth of the city, after the incorporation in France, in 1601, and the creation of the tax-free zone in 1815. In Gex, you can also see remarkable and well-preserved fountains.
